What's involved in becoming certified?
Your instruction will be conducted in the following three phases, so that you may develop required knowledge, skills, and experience:
Knowledge Development starts you off. Your understanding of the basic principles of scuba diving begins here. You can complete this phase of your education online, through independent study, or in a classroom. The choice is yours. Confined Water Dives allow you to learn and practice the basic scuba skills. These lessons take place in a pool or other confined water space under the guidance of an expertly trained PADI Scuba Instructor who is with you every step of the way. Open Water Dives take your “pool” skills into the ocean or a lake where you gain more experience and practice with your new abilities. These dives will introduce you to a whole new underwater world that is fast becoming yours to explore! |
Let's say you wanted to get started right away...
You can! PADI offers an eLearning option you can enroll in right now called PADI Open Water Diver Online. This interactive computer-based program permits you to learn at your own pace, and on your own schedule (we know you’re busy!). If the Mac or PC isn’t your style, we’ve got you covered. Alternative home-study materials are available. PADI’s Open Water Diver Touch™ is an easily accessible tablet app. And then there's PADI’s Open Water Diver Manual & Video, a book and DVD package that can be picked up from your local PADI dive shop. Lisa will schedule time with you to check your progress and make sure you understand important scuba diving information.

And what about scuba gear ?
The PADI Open Water Diver course trains you to use basic scuba gear: mask, snorkel, fins, regulator, buoyancy control device, tank, and weights. The equipment you wear depends on where you dive; colder waters will involve more equipment to protect you from the cold whereas warmer waters usually decrease this requirement. Your PADI Instructor will specify your scuba kit for the local conditions. In fact, he or she will be your valuable source of information for all things scuba.
